Protaras

Cape Greko Protaras

Protaras' beachesProtaras is located next to the bustling Ayia Napa, which is famous not only, and perhaps not so much for the white, sandy beaches, but for the vast entertainment options- so popular among young people, and so tiring for families with children.

Not long ago, Protaras was not widely known as a resort destination, despite the high quality of the beaches, the exceptional “white” coastal sand, clean water and the lack of waves in a cozy bay.

So it was before. But in 2001, on one of the “golden” beaches, in a small fishing village the first comfortable hotel Conctantinos at the Great Beach was built, who laid the foundation for the birth of new resorts of Cyprus, focused primarily on family vacation.

Protaras beaches

Capo BayOne of the best beaches in Protaras – Fig Tree Bay – is located in the center of Protaras. It is a very flat place and a complete beach infrastructured area.

Konnos Bay beach is the perfect place for secluded relaxation. However, it should be borne in mind that sometimes the beach is visited by groups of drunken young people who take go for a swim after a heavy night of “libations” (Ayia Napa is only 4 km away).

The small beach Scoutari Beach which extends out only at 50 meters is convenient for families with children. In the high summer season, the beach is crowded with travelers due to close proximity to the three hotels popular among Germans and Swedes: the Sunny Cost, Scoutari Beach and Malama Holiday Village.

A good choice for families with children is Louma Beach, with a beach area of more than 400 meters long. However, you must bear in mind that from the beach to the center of Protaras, where there is a sufficient number of taverns and restaurants, there are a few kilometers. On the beach, the hungry tourist can only have something to “hold up” their hunger for a while, like a croissant with coffee.

Unlike Louma Beach, Pernera Beach, with a long coastline of over 200 meters, offers visitors not only a beach holiday, but also a full lunch or dinner in any of the 5 restaurants. However, Pernera is not so comfortable for families with children due to the fairly steep bottom, quickly disappearing into the depths. There is a diving club for those interested.

Interesting sights in Protaras

  • Protaras' beaches Prophet Elias Church, built in the XIV century. It has a well preserved iconostasis and frescoes;
  • the Museum of Byzantine Culture, with an interesting collection of everyday objects of ancient settlers of the island;
  • the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the XIII century;
  • the Historical Museum of Protaras where you can see fragments of ancient frescoes and ancient sculptures. The museum holds an interesting collection of Cypriot vehicles – from simple carts and cabs that were used by the peasants, to luxury coaches for the local aristocracy;
  • one of the most beautiful places in Protaras – Cape Greco, located 3 kilometers from Protaras on the way to Ayia Napa. If the day is not too sultry, it is nice for a walk on foot or by bike.
  • On the western side of the cape the entire rocky coast is dotted with natural caves formed by the sea; the cape and the edge is decorated with the ” Lovers bridge” – a rock hanging over the water, similar to a thin bridge. You should not naively believe in the existence of the monster To Filiko Teras, which frightens tourists accodring to the Cypriot guides. However, this is nothing more than a legend, which was born based on the Greek myth of the good monster Scylla; children can visit the Ocean Aquarium Park, and do not forget the daily music show the “Singing Fountains” recognized last year as the best light show in Europe.
