1st International Monodrama Festival

The European Capital of Culture Pafos2017

presents a new international institution

23 – 29 October 2017

Attikon, Pafos

Pursuing the initiative launched two years ago with the International Monodrama Platform in 2015 and continued in the following year with the First Monodrama Platform for Cypriot Creators, the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 organises the 1st International Monodrama Festival at the renovated Attikon theatre, from the 23rd until the 29th of October.

Comprising a total of 14 performances from England, Poland, Japan, Iran, Spain, Greece, Romania, Algeria, Lithuania, Israel and Cyprus, this first Festival aspires to place Cyprus on the International Monodrama Festival calendar, while establishing synergies and promoting artistic creation, both within Cyprus and abroad.

With two daily performances at 19:00 and 21:00, the audience will have the opportunity to watch on stage some of the greatest and multi-award winning actors in corresponding international Monodrama Festivals, including Pip Utton (Churchill, Adolf, Maggie(Thatcher)), Birute Mar (Antigone) and Alexandar Rubinovas (Koba/Stalin). The event will also host performers such as Yaser Khaser from Iranian Kurdistan, Maria Gomez from the Basque Country, Tomoko Ando from faraway Japan (ARIΚA Theatre), as well as performances of great artistic worth, such as “The Box” based on Aris Alexandrou’s astonishing novel from Greece, and the dramatisation of the German classic work “Kohlhaas” of Heinrich von Kleist, which has been successfully staged in Athens for many years. The programme also includes the performance “Mira” from Algeria, performances from Poland, Romania and Israel and the best performances of last year’s platform for Cypriot creators: “Karagiozis”, directed by Andreas Araouzos, and “Rebecca”, by Charalambia Theophanous.

The Artistic Director of this new theatrical institution, Minas Tingilis, has primarily selected performances based on the works of great authors and on historical events or personalities.

The International Monodrama Festival is supported by: Medochemie Ltd, Royal Crown Insurance, the British Council in Cyprus, the Fujairah UAE – International Theatre Institute, the Embassy of Spain in Nicosia and the Embassy of Israel in Nicosia.
