The Poet and the Women

The Poet and the Women

Saturday 9th and Monday 11th of July at 21:00

The ETHAL theater opens this year’s Festival of Ancient Greek Drama with the multifaceted comedy written by Aristophanes- “The Poet and the Women“.

The women wished to get rid of Euripides, who in their opinion is a misogynist, feeling insulted how he laughs at them in his creations. On the day of the Thesmophoria celebration, they decide to execute their plan to kill him. As his only way out, Euripides sends his friend Mnesilochus, dressed as a woman, to go to the celebration that is strictly forbidden for men, in order to defend him. However Mnesilochus, in his eager attempt to justify Euripides, gives himself in to the lust and everything gets quite complicated..

“The Poet and the Women” is one of the three Aristopahnes’ surviving plays about women, where he outlines the human weaknesses with a sense of humor and scathing irony.

The play will be show in Greek language with English and Russian subtitles.
