Nicosia, Cyprus. The local district organisation EOA said 268 buildings in Nicosia have been deemed unsafe, with four requiring immediate evacuation, and estimated costs exceeding €2 million. An EOA spokesperson said most buildings already declared dangerous remain occupied.

EOA said one of the four buildings requiring immediate evacuation is located in the centre of town and three are in residential areas, and they are scheduled to be evacuated in the coming days. It said the estimated cost for the removal of hazardous materials in the remaining dangerous buildings amounts to €2.3 million, excluding operating costs, while total funds made available by the government to the district organisations amount to €2 million for two years.
EOA measures and enforcement
EOA said it enforces applicable legislation and uses available institutional tools to ensure public safety. It said that where deemed necessary, immediate protective measures are taken, including fencing, supporting, or removing dangerous elements.
Paphos meeting and figures
An emergency meeting was held in Paphos that afternoon to discuss the matter. Head of the Paphos district government Charalambos Pittokopitis said there are 226 dangerous buildings in Paphos, with 71 within the municipal borders of the town, 109 in communities, and 46 in the municipality of Polis Chrysochous. He said that of the 71 within the town’s municipal borders, 10 to 12 are in a more dangerous condition, and that directives to initiate an evacuation procedure have been issued.
