The light display on the Venetian wall in Nicosia

Nicosia, Cyprus. A 3D light journey was projected onto the historic Venetian walls of Nicosia at Eleftheria Square on Tuesday evening and will be shown again from Friday to Sunday. The screenings are scheduled to continue throughout the summer.

Officials highlight Nicosia’s European role

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said at the ceremony that, in recent months, Nicosia had been at the heart of the European Union, hosting leaders, heads of European institutions, ministers, officials and technocrats from across Europe who helped shape policies and decisions concerning the common European future.

He said Nicosia had played a decisive role during Cyprus’ EU Council presidency and added that the capital had been the focus of important meetings and high-level events.

Mayor stresses unity and shared responsibility

Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos said Europe’s history was a reminder that unity is not guaranteed, but is the result of continuous effort, cooperation and shared responsibility.

He said that, as the capital of the Republic of Cyprus and an active member of the European family, Nicosia remained committed to the common vision for a united, just, democratic, humane, sustainable and truly equal Europe for all its citizens.

Screenings to continue on weekends

The event was attended by ambassadors, MPs, state officials, the deputy mayor of the municipal districts and others, who watched an audiovisual spectacle highlighting the history of Nicosia, its cultural heritage and its connection with its European identity.

According to the municipality, screenings will take place in the semi-circular section of the Venetian walls of Davila bastion, on the Eleftherias Square bridge, from Friday to Sunday between 9pm and 10pm.
