753 candidates register for Cyprus parliamentary election across six districts

Some 753 candidates are vying for the 56 seats in the House of Representatives

Nicosia, Cyprus. A total of 753 people filed candidacies for the forthcoming parliamentary elections as official registrations opened for those seeking one of the 56 seats in the House of Representatives.


Candidate registrations by district

In the Nicosia district, 261 candidates from 18 parties registered, including 180 men and 81 women.

In the Limassol district, 167 candidates registered, with 17 parties represented on the ballot paper; 120 candidates are men and 47 are women.

The Famagusta district recorded 141 candidates, including 100 men and 41 women, with 18 parties set to appear on the ballot paper.

In the Larnaca district, 76 candidates registered, including 50 men and 26 women, from 16 parties.

In the Paphos district, 67 people from 16 parties filed candidacies.

The Kyrenia district had 41 candidates, including 29 men and 12 women, while 17 parties will be represented on the ballot paper, more than in Larnaca or Paphos.

Seats allocated by district

A total of 56 seats will be contested later this month, with 19 seats allocated to the Nicosia district, 12 to Limassol, 11 to Famagusta, six to Larnaca, five to Paphos, and three to Kyrenia.

Paphos gained one extra seat ahead of May’s election due to growth in its voting population, with the gain coming at the expense of the Nicosia district.

Constitutional framework

The Republic of Cyprus’ constitution initially provided for a parliament with 50 voting members, including 35 Greek Cypriots and 15 Turkish Cypriots, as well as non-voting observers from the Armenian, Latin, and Maronite communities.
