Akamas highlights Cyprus biodiversity and human-nature challenges, commissioner says

Akamas

Nicosia, Cyprus. Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou said on Wednesday that the Akamas is a living example of Cyprus’ rich biodiversity and of the challenges of balancing human activity with nature.

Biodiversity and protected species

In a statement ahead of the upcoming World Day on Biodiversity, Theodosiou said the area hosts about 650 of Cyprus’ 1,650 native plant species, including 46 endemic and 28 threatened species. She also cited protected fauna such as the sea turtles Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas and the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus.

Natura 2000 network and migratory birds

Theodosiou said Akamas covers 18,082 hectares and, together with its marine area, is among the most representative examples of the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus. She added that it is a crucial stop for migratory bird species.

Management priorities

Theodosiou said management of the Natura 2000 network requires stable orientation, scientific documentation and long-term planning to link environmental governance with the public’s quality of life. She reiterated that Akamas reflects both Cyprus’ biodiversity and the challenges of balanced coexistence between humans and nature.
