Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ Eurovision representative Antigone Buxton said she is unconcerned by criticism of the video clip for her song ‘Jalla’, saying her priority is to showcase the Cypriot dialect and identity internationally. She said reactions to the song itself have been largely positive despite divided opinion over the visuals.

Buxton responds to reactions

Speaking on CyBC on Saturday, Buxton said online responses have been supportive, citing fan-made dance videos and positive comments about the song. “Everyone says really nice things. They love the song and I’m very grateful,” she said.

Criticism of the video clip

Addressing negative comments about the video, Buxton said she was not concerned, stating that she likes it. “We answer in the song itself. ‘Let them talk’, that’s it,” she said.

Focus on Cypriot dialect and identity

Buxton said including the Cypriot dialect was a personal ambition. “Before I even went to Eurovision, I always said that if I go, I want to do something Cypriot,” she said, adding that she wanted to show part of the dialect used in Cyprus and that she was happy with how it has been received.

Public debate and open letter

Her comments come amid ongoing public debate over Cyprus’ 2026 Eurovision entry, particularly the video clip. Earlier this month, academics, artists and former officials signed an open letter urging CyBC to withdraw both the song and the video, describing them as “insulting” and raising concerns over scenes showing dangerous road behaviour.

Scenes cited as problematic

Footage showing youths performing wheelies on mopeds was singled out by critics as especially problematic.
