Attempted murder suspect sent to direct trial in Larnaca criminal court

Tersefanou, Cyprus. A 33-year-old man accused of attempting to murder a 40-year-old on January 18 was on Tuesday referred for direct trial before the Larnaca criminal court. He will remain in custody until the court convenes on March 12.


Court proceedings and custody

The Larnaca criminal court is set to convene on March 12, with the suspect remaining in custody until then. The decision was not contested by his defence attorney.

Charges

The suspect is facing ten offenses, including attempted murder, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, causing injury, stabbing, burglary, common assault, threats, harassment, and infliction of mental harm.

Incident report

The incident was reported on January 18 at around 7.15am by a 46-year-old woman, who told police the suspect entered through a balcony door while she was with the 40-year-old victim. After entering, he allegedly attacked and beat the man.

According to the report, the suspect then went to the kitchen, armed himself with a cleaver, and attacked the 40-year-old, inflicting injuries to various parts of his body. He also allegedly assaulted the 46-year-old woman and threatened her life.

The woman escaped to the building’s parking area, where she was found by police. The suspect had already fled by the time officers arrived.

Victim’s injuries and treatment

The 40-year-old was initially taken to Larnaca general hospital, where he was found to have suffered amputation of his left thumb, a partial amputation of his right thumb and index finger, multiple lacerations to his hands and head, and a laceration to his back.

He was later transferred to Nicosia general hospital for further treatment.

Investigation

The case is being investigated by Larnaca and Kiti police departments.
