Avakas Gorge trail in Akamas National Forest Park remains closed amid adverse weather

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Avakas Gorge trail in the Akamas National Forest Park will remain closed until further notice due to adverse weather conditions, the forestry department said on Monday.

Closure notice and safety concerns

The department cited increased water flow, slippery ground, and the risk of falling rocks and debris as reasons for keeping the trail closed. It said the gorge has been closed since December 2025 and will remain shut until it is completely safe for visitors.

Measures and public advisory

Signs have been placed at the entrance to the gorge. The department apologised for any inconvenience and said the closure was necessary for public safety.

Recent rescue operations

Last week, 31 hikers were rescued from the gorge after being trapped by rising water. A group of 26 hikers called for help at 1pm and was later hoisted to safety with ropes and life jackets.

A second call was received at around 4pm regarding five people trapped in the same gorge. Rescuers pulled three people out of the rising water and brought the other two out safely from a different part of the gorge.
