Ayia Napa, Cyprus. Mayor Christos Zannetou said Ayia Napa can protect the stability and strength of its tourism sector despite fallout from recent developments in the wider Middle East, provided there is planning, coordination and calm. He spoke after a March 13 meeting at Ayia Napa town hall focused on preparations for the 2026 summer season.
Meeting ahead of 2026 season
Zannetou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that representatives of tourism bodies from Cyprus and abroad met at Ayia Napa town hall to exchange views and coordinate action. Participants discussed the outlook for the coming season and challenges facing international tourism following the latest developments in the wider Middle East.
Economic importance and immediate measures
Zannetou said the situation has caused concern across the sector but that Ayia Napa’s tourism product could remain steady with the right handling. He said tourism is one of the most important pillars of the local and national economy and called for immediate measures to safeguard jobs and support business viability.
Winter operations and market messaging
Zannetou stressed the importance of keeping hotels that are already open operating through the winter. He said this would help avoid sending the wrong message abroad that Cyprus is facing tourism-related difficulties.
Support for workers and businesses
He called for meaningful support for workers and businesses to prevent layoffs, work suspensions and additional pressure on the market. He said measures such as partial state coverage of wage costs and extending unemployment benefits where needed should be examined without delay so businesses and employees can return to normal activity as soon as possible.
Shared commitment and broader image
Zannetou said the meeting confirmed a shared commitment to coordinated action aimed at ensuring the smooth progress of the tourist season while maintaining service quality and visitor confidence. He added that a collective effort was needed not only to support Ayia Napa but also to improve the broader image of the free Famagusta district and Cyprus.
What measures do you think are most important to maintain visitor confidence during periods of regional uncertainty?
