Xylophagou, Cyprus. A hearing on a bail application by a father accused of causing the deaths of his two young children after they were left in a vehicle was adjourned on Thursday and will resume on Friday morning.
Defence application
Defence lawyer Christos Theodoulou told the British bases court that the application sought permission for his client to travel to Bulgaria for the children’s funeral and his release pending trial.
Theodoulou said his client wished to return to work and continue supporting his family if released.
Arguments over bail
The defence argued there was no evidence that the accused would abscond, interfere with witnesses or fail to surrender to the court.
“There is no evidence that he will show any lack of willingness to surrender,” Theodoulou said.
He added that his client had no previous criminal convictions, was a first-time offender and had strong ties to Cyprus.
Travel arrangements
The defence submitted that concerns about the defendant leaving the country could be addressed through cooperation between the SBA authorities, the Republic of Cyprus and Bulgarian authorities.
