Nicosia, Cyprus. The Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center is advancing expansion plans that include new operating theatres, a €4.5 million PET/CT scanner and a new unit in Larnaca, while warning additional state funding will be required. The centre said its growing needs and upgraded services cannot be sustained without fairer compensation under Gesy and possible extra government support.
Funding and Gesy compensation
Speaking before the House finance committee, board chairman Christos Triantafyllides said the centre’s expanding needs and service upgrades require changes to how it is compensated under Gesy and may also require additional government support. Consultations are underway on a legislative amendment that would allow differentiated compensation for specialised centres, with a bill potentially submitted after the summer.
Infrastructure upgrades and budget approval
The centre is creating three new operating theatres, which would allow it to carry out surgeries in-house for the first time. The project may require a supplementary health ministry budget, subject to parliamentary approval if it exceeds €1 million.
Larnaca unit planned for 2026
A new oncology unit in Larnaca is expected to open in October 2026, serving patients from Larnaca and Famagusta and easing pressure on facilities in Nicosia.
Donor support and sustainability
The centre said that despite continued support from donors and the Bank of Cyprus, sustainable state backing will be necessary to meet increasing patient needs.
How do you think the planned changes to Gesy compensation could affect access to specialised oncology services?
