Nicosia, Cyprus. The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet will tour Cyprus this spring with a production of Carmen that blends ballet and flamenco while also addressing women’s rights. Performances are scheduled in Paphos, Nicosia and Limassol from May 21 to 23.
Production concept and creative direction
The production is presented as a bold interpretation of George Bizet’s Carmen that goes beyond the classic narrative to address the struggle for women’s rights. Under the creative direction of David Gutiérrez, it incorporates Bizet’s original music alongside Spanish guitar, jazz and flamenco singing, and includes references to Prosper Mérimée’s work as well as the cultural diversity of Barcelona.
Cast and performance elements
The show features flamenco song and dance, including zapateado, along with detailed costumes and set design. The production is described as bringing gypsy stories set in an unequal world, focusing on themes of freedom and courage.
Cyprus dates and venues
The performances will take place on May 21 at Markideio Theatre in Paphos, May 22 at Nicosia Municipal Theatre in Nicosia, and May 23 at Pattihio Theatre in Limassol, all starting at 7.30pm. Ticket information is listed at www.soldoutticketbox.com.
