Dhekelia, Cyprus. A police officer in the British Bases has been awarded the King’s Overseas Territory Police Medal as part of the New Year’s Honours, SBA authorities said on Wednesday. Temporary superintendent Marcos Petrou described the honour as a “lovely surprise.”
Award announced in New Year’s Honours
Petrou, who joined the force three decades ago at the age of 25, said he learned of the award on December 30 and felt pride at being recognised for his work. He thanked those who nominated him.
Career experience and support
Petrou said he has worked in almost every role within the force and that the experience has helped him develop as an officer. He added that he received significant support to progress in his career and said he was grateful for opportunities to grow in different roles.
Tribute to colleagues
While expressing pride in receiving the award, Petrou credited fellow officers he has worked with over the past 30 years. He said the recognition was made possible by the SBA police “family” and thanked colleagues for their hard work.
How do you think long-serving officers should be recognised for their contributions?
