Paphos, Cyprus. A British father arrested after his three-year-old son died following a fall from a fourth-floor hotel window will remain in custody until the expiry of his eight-day remand order.
Any request for temporary release to attend the child’s funeral would be considered by Attorney General George Savvides only after the remand expires, police said.
Case under legal review
The 40-year-old father was arrested after his son died from injuries sustained in the fall at a hotel in Paphos last weekend.
Police said their investigation has been completed and the case has been forwarded to the Legal Service for examination.
Paphos assistant police operations director and police spokesman Michalis Nikolaou previously said the investigator had submitted the case for further examination and that any decision on prosecution would be made by the attorney general.
Remand and possible proceedings
Police said any consideration of a request for the father to attend the funeral would take place no earlier than Tuesday, when the remand order expires.
Earlier expectations that he could be released under strict conditions before the end of the remand period have been ruled out.
If the attorney general decides to begin criminal proceedings immediately after the remand expires, the father would be brought before a court. Otherwise, he could be released under conditions while legal proceedings continue.
Toxicology results pending
Police said toxicology results relating to the father remain outstanding.
