London, United Kingdom. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told U.S. President Donald Trump that the United Kingdom would remain committed to defence and security and support the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Burnham’s office said on Monday.
The call took place shortly after Burnham became prime minister, according to a Downing Street readout.

A Downing Street spokesperson said Burnham underlined his commitment to defence and security, adding that safeguarding the United Kingdom and its allies was at the top of his agenda.

Trump updated Burnham on the situation in the Middle East during the call, the statement said.
Burnham outlined the UK’s commitment to securing the movement of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, with the aim of supporting global supply chains and reducing costs for businesses and families across the country.
