Limassol, Cyprus. The cabinet has approved the development of Limassol Mall, ending a lengthy process involving competing proposals for two shopping centres planned 300 metres apart. The decision also rejected the rival The Mall of Limassol application.

Decision and road planning

According to InBusinessNews, the cabinet approved the Limassol Mall proposal while rejecting the competing development.

Politis reported that recent progress on the regulatory plan for Ayios Athanasiou Avenue, which borders the proposed site, was a key factor in the decision. The road project changed the assessment of traffic in the area and was considered in the cabinet’s approval under its discretionary powers.

No timetable has been set for the road works, despite the project being regarded as a long-standing municipal priority, Politis said.

Approved development

Limassol Mall is being promoted by the Papantoniou Group and the consortium behind Nicosia Mall, which includes the Zorbas Group, PHC Group, Athienitis Group and VLM Group.

The mall will be built on vacant land at the entrance to the Ayios Athanasios industrial area, next to Jumbo. Politis reported that much of the site is within a commercial planning zone adjoining the industrial area.

Published planning documents show the development will include about 90 retail units, six kiosks, two restaurants, two cafés, a food court with seven additional eateries and seating for about 500 people, a five-screen cinema, an indoor entertainment area and about 1,270 parking spaces.

Rival proposal

The rejected proposal, The Mall of Limassol, was submitted by Atterbury Europe, the company behind Mall of Cyprus and Mall of Engomi. It was planned for land fronting Spyros Kyprianou Avenue within the municipality of Amathounta.
