Cabinet set to decide on land expropriation for new Polis Chrysochous hospital

Nikos Christodoulides

Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. The cabinet was set to issue a decision on Wednesday regarding the expropriation of land for a planned new hospital in Polis Chrysochous, President Nikos Christodoulides said. He said the move is intended to keep the project on schedule.

Cabinet decision and project timetable

Christodoulides said it was important to proceed based on established timetables and that the cabinet would decide on the expropriation of the land on which the hospital will be built.

The timetables were set out in January, when Christodoulides met representatives of the Polis Chrysochous municipality and MPs from the Paphos district.

According to the plans, the hospital’s foundation stone will be laid in February next year, with construction to be completed by the end of 2028. The construction cost is set at €17 million.

Site details and land ownership

The selected site is opposite Polis Chrysochous’ fire station and spans three plots of land, two of which are owned by Turkish Cypriots.

Previous announcements and local response

Christodoulides formally announced plans for the new hospital in September last year, describing the project as overdue and of primary importance for the region and its people.

Polis Chrysochous mayor Yiotis Papachristofi said the hospital’s construction had not come before time, adding that local needs for medical care and attention are increasing.

Papachristofi publicly called for a new hospital in December 2024 in a letter to the then health minister Michael Damianos, saying the municipality needed special support from central government to ensure proper and adequate medical care.

He said the existing hospital has significant problems largely due to its age, noting that parts of the building were constructed during British colonial rule and no longer meet modern needs.
