Christodoulides arrives in Yerevan for first EU-Armenia summit

Yerevan, Armenia. President Nikos Christodoulides arrived in Yerevan to attend the first-ever EU-Armenia summit on Monday. He is scheduled to hold meetings and take part in summit sessions before returning to Cyprus in the afternoon.


Meetings and summit participation

During the day, Christodoulides is scheduled to meet Moldovan President Maia Sandu, after which he is expected to attend the summit’s official opening ceremony. At 10.30 am, he will participate in the plenary session and moderate an interactive panel on European cohesion attended by the Presidents of France, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Bilateral contacts on the sidelines

On the sidelines of the summit, Christodoulides is set to hold bilateral meetings with heads of state and government, as well as with heads of organisations, before departing for Cyprus in the afternoon.

Agenda and expected discussions

The summit is set to focus on strengthening bilateral relations in energy and transport, as well as the digital sphere. European Council President Antonio Costa, expected to join alongside EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, said: “United by shared values and a commitment to international law and the rules-based international order, this milestone will mark an important investment in peace, security, connectivity and prosperity in the South Caucasus.”

Leaders are expected to discuss progress related to ensuring peace and security in the South Caucasus, as well as current global challenges including the latest developments in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, welcomed Christodoulides to the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, according to a social media post.
