Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides on Sunday evening lamented the electoral defeat of Dipa and Edek, two of the three parties supporting his government, saying both deserved to win seats.

Election result

Christodoulides said Dipa and Edek “deserved to be in the new House” and had “proven it,” adding that they missed out on parliament by only tens or hundreds of votes.

Democracy and participation

He said he was satisfied that the election was completed smoothly and in a way that honours democracy, the institutions of the Republic of Cyprus, and the Cypriot people.

He thanked everyone who worked “with professionalism, responsibility, and a sense of duty” to organise and conduct the parliamentary elections, and said “today belongs to democracy and to the people.”

He added that “our democracy spoke through its people” and that the Cypriot people’s verdict was “absolutely respected,” while congratulating all those who stood for election.

Government agenda

Christodoulides said his government would continue to work consistently to implement its programme, despite losing two of the three parties in parliament that had supported it.

He said this would be done “for a stronger economy, for more opportunities for the next generation, for a more effective state, for social cohesion, for reforms which will improve people’s everyday life, and for a more resilient, more modern, and more reliable Cyprus.”

He added that the government would continue through collaboration and that society, through the messages of the election, supported the policies his government had implemented.

“These messages encourage us to continue with even greater determination,” he said.
