Christodoulides outlines 55 actions for 2026 in Cyprus state of the union address

Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said the government aims to make Cyprus resilient and robust domestically and overseas in his annual state of the union address on Thursday. He reviewed three years of his administration and outlined 55 planned actions for 2026.

Review of the administration and objectives

In the televised speech, broadcast on television and online, Christodoulides took stock of his time in office since assuming the presidency on February 28, 2023. He said the administration has been pursuing clear goals since taking office, including addressing long-standing problems and changing mindsets to improve daily life while laying the groundwork for a modern Cyprus.

Five pillars of government policy

Christodoulides summarised five pillars of his administration: an outward-looking foreign policy with a clear European-Western orientation and strengthening of the armed forces; a robust and resilient economy; ongoing modernisation of the state; enhancing transparency and accountability while cracking down on corruption; and policies aimed at prosperity and improving people’s day-to-day lives.

Foreign relations and upcoming visits

Looking to the coming year, Christodoulides said emphasis would be placed on boosting ties with “countries of special interest,” including India and nations in Central Asia. He highlighted the “historic visit” to Cyprus by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he would reciprocate with a visit to India in May.

Cyprus issue and negotiations

Christodoulides said expanding foreign relations is aimed at what he called the top priority of liberation, ending the Turkish occupation, and reunification of Cyprus. He said he is fully ready to resume Cyprus negotiations from where they left off at Crans-Montana in 2017.
