Christodoulides outlines family support, tax and pension reforms at large families event

Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said the government has pursued reforms focused on children, mothers and families, highlighting measures introduced over the past three years. He spoke in remarks delivered on his behalf at an event honouring 250 mothers of large families.

Support for large families and children

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Deputy Social Welfare Minister Klea Hadjistefanou Papaellina, Christodoulides said the government has implemented policies aimed at supporting large families while addressing what he called the demographic problem.

He cited an increase of five per cent in the child allowance and the removal of income and property limits for families with five or more children, providing universal support for these families.

Expansion of optional all-day schools

Christodoulides said the number of optional all-day schools has increased from 222 primary and secondary schools in the 2022-2023 academic year to 326 currently, with a further 60 planned for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Tax and pension reforms

On tax reform, he said the government has provided increased and progressive tax exemptions for children, which rise with each child.

On pension reform, he said periods of childcare will be recognised as insured periods, including for women who have never worked, and that periods of informal care for family members will also be recognised as insured periods.

Measures linked to regional crisis and household pressures

Referring to the crisis in the region, Christodoulides said the government introduced an additional package of measures from the beginning of April to address the effects of geopolitical turmoil.

He said the package includes a reduction in consumer tax on motor fuels, a subsidy of employment in the tourism industry, and zero VAT on basic food items such as meat and fish. He added that these measures, together with a further reduction of VAT on electricity, amount to more than €200 million in support.
