Christodoulides says coming period critical for Cyprus talks

Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said the coming period would be crucial for efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue.

He made the remarks on Friday after meeting Famagusta municipality officials and foreign visitors marking the anniversary of the occupation.

Recent contacts

Government spokesman Victor Papadopoulos said Christodoulides briefed the delegation on recent developments, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Cyprus earlier this week.

The president also referred to his earlier meeting with EU special envoy for Cyprus Raffaele Fitto.

EU involvement

Christodoulides stressed the importance of European Union involvement in United Nations-led efforts, Papadopoulos said.

He also noted the potential benefits for Turkey’s EU aspirations if progress is achieved.

Expanded conference

Intensive consultations are under way to organise an expanded conference that could help facilitate the resumption of formal negotiations, Christodoulides said.
