Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said the government is determined to raise pensions through reforms, describing the issue as a priority for 2026. He made the comments during a meeting with trade unions SEK, PEO and Deok.
Meeting with trade unions
Christodoulides said the meeting was convened to discuss issues raised by the trade unions, adding that ministers and other officers were present for that reason. He also said the government acknowledged the importance and contribution of the trade unions, particularly regarding the economy.
Reforms targeted for 2026
Christodoulides said pension reforms would be added to the agenda, describing them as one of the most important issues for the government in 2026. He said views should be exchanged through the dialogue already underway, with the aim of concluding all procedures, including at the House of Representatives, within 2026.
Aim to raise pensions
He described the planned reforms as a significant step, saying that for the first time since 1980 the government would address the issue in depth with the sole aim of raising pensions. He said the government wants a substantive increase, particularly for low-income pensioners.
Labour minister comments on timeline
Christodoulides’ remarks followed comments the previous day by Labour Minister Marinos Mousiouttas, who said after a two-hour session of the labour advisory body that the government aims to submit legislation reforming the first pillar of the pension system to parliament by early June, with the objective of implementing the changes by 2027.
What do you think should be the main priority of the planned pension reforms?
