Christodoulides urges election candidates to set out clear positions ahead of parliamentary vote

Palaichori, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides on Sunday urged candidates in the forthcoming parliamentary elections to set out clear positions, speaking during a visit to a memorial service for Eoka fighters in the Troodos village of Palaichori.

Respect for voters and parliament’s role

Christodoulides said the executive branch would fully respect the Cypriot people’s decision, and noted that the three parties supporting the government—Diko, Dipa and Edek—did not hold a majority of seats in the last parliament.

He said his government was working to achieve positive results for the public, adding that the challenges Cypriots face “do not have an ideological colour.”

He said candidates have the right to seek votes but should present a clear ideological and political framework, stressing that parliament is a legislative, not an executive, body and that such clarity is the minimum owed to voters.

Focus on daily life and major issues

Christodoulides said he hoped that in the period remaining until the elections there would be clear positions and approaches on issues affecting daily life and major national matters, including the Cyprus problem, foreign policy, relations with neighbouring states and internal issues.

He said he would not comment on the positions themselves or take a stance on parties’ or candidates’ approaches, but stressed that it was important for positions to be clear and known to everyone.

Seat distribution by district

Of the 56 seats to be contested later this month, 19 will be elected from Nicosia, 12 from Limassol, 11 from Famagusta, six from Larnaca, five from Paphos, and three from Kyrenia.
