Christodoulides warns of “turbulent times” in address at defence conference in Rome

President Nikos Christodoulides

Rome, Italy. President Nikos Christodoulides on Thursday warned of “turbulent times” during his address to the “Battlefield Redefined” defence conference. He pointed to ongoing conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, as evidence of the fragility of peace and the need for preparedness.

Focus on preparedness and deterrence

Christodoulides said the war in Ukraine and conflicts in Cyprus’ “extended neighbourhood and beyond” underline the critical importance of preparedness. He said vigilance and advanced defence capabilities are indispensable for securing freedom.

He said Cyprus recognises the defence industry’s vital role in enhancing deterrence capabilities and in strengthening the country’s role in regional and European security, adding that the island is “suffering from Turkish military occupation”.

Hybrid threats and resilience

He said that in an era marked by hybrid threats, cyber challenges, and a contested space domain, Europe must strengthen its resilience while remaining innovative, competitive, and connected to trusted partners. He described investment in the sector as a strategic necessity.

Cyprus defence industry participation and funding

Christodoulides said he believes in Cyprus’ defence industry and its prospects and potential, adding that it has shown growth and resilience in recent years.

He said the industry has become a strategic pillar of national security and industrial policy, with 18 Cypriot companies securing participation in 44 European defence industry development programmes and projects.

He said these projects have attracted approximately €48 million in direct funding for Cypriot companies, strengthening technological capabilities, product development, and industrial capacity.

Role in Europe’s defence supply chain

He said Cypriot companies have established Cyprus as a reliable and credible co-producer within Europe’s defence supply chain, and that Cyprus is evolving from a participant to a contributor to Europe’s defence and dual-use technological ecosystem.

He said the level of investment “speaks for itself” and told stakeholders that the government would continue to support them.
