Commuter train collides with crane near Cartagena in Spain, causing minor injuries

Train line R1 out of service, while all railway infrastructure is checked after three derailments in 48 hours caused accidents that left dozens dead, in Premia de Mar

Cartagena, Spain. A commuter train collided with a crane near the port city of Cartagena in Spain’s Murcia region on Thursday, emergency services said. Several people suffered minor injuries, and authorities said the train did not overturn or derail.

Crash details and response

Murcia’s emergency services said the first calls about the crash came in just after noon. A spokesperson said the train had not been overturned or derailed.

Recent rail incidents in Spain

The crash was Spain’s fourth rail incident in less than a week. Spain is still reeling from a high-speed train collision in the southern Andalusia region on Sunday that killed at least 43 people.

Two days later, a commuter train derailed near Barcelona after a containment wall fell onto the track due to heavy rain, killing the driver and seriously injuring four passengers. The main train drivers’ union called a nationwide strike over safety standards after that derailment and a second collision in the northeastern Catalonia region the same day, Tuesday.

Service disruption and resumption

Spanish rail operator Adif said traffic on the line in Murcia was disrupted by what it described as “the intrusion into the infrastructure gauge by a crane not belonging to the railway operation.” Adif later said services had resumed on the line.
