Contemporary Art Under Pressure returns to Isnotgallery with works priced up to €500

Nicosia, Cyprus. The group exhibition Contemporary Art Under Pressure is running at Isnotgallery until May 20, presenting works by established artists priced at a maximum of €500. The exhibition aims to challenge the perception that art is only affordable for high society collectors.

Annual exhibition and pricing concept

Isnotgallery said the exhibition has become an established annual event and described its title as a response to socio-political conditions that increasingly shape everyday life on a global scale. The gallery said it is presenting a selection of works with a maximum sale price of €500.

How the exhibition’s title has evolved

The concept was first presented at Isnotgallery in 2008 under the name Cheap Art, which the gallery described as a somewhat ironic commentary on the prevailing climate of economic abundance at the time. The period was followed by a global financial crisis and a forced bank deposit haircut in March 2013.

The exhibition later became Rich Art in Poor Times, reflecting the economic and social realities of the era. In 2021, amid increasingly difficult social conditions, the title evolved into Rich Art in Difficult Times, and it has now been redefined again with Contemporary Art Under Pressure.

Gallery statement on art and social conditions

“Art itself is under pressure,” the gallery said, adding that it remains a means of resistance against the harsh realities of the time. The gallery said that in times of conflict, art becomes “a tool of awakening” and “must provoke rather than merely please, challenge rather than comfort,” while supporting people in difficult times and serving as a refuge offering “awakening, resistance and psychological support.”
