Costa praises European deployment to protect Cyprus after drone attack linked to Iran

President of the European Council Antonio Costa speaks during the St Matthew's Day banquet

Hamburg, Germany. European Council President Antonio Costa said Greece, France, Italy and Spain showed European autonomy and solidarity by rapidly deploying military forces to protect Cyprus. He spoke on Friday evening in Hamburg amid heightened regional tensions.

Costa’s remarks in Hamburg

Speaking at the Matthiae Mahl ceremony in the presence of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Costa referred to developments in the Middle East and broader geopolitical challenges facing the European Union. He warned that retaliatory actions by Iran and its proxies undermine international security.

He said the war in the Middle East is of the utmost concern and described Iran as responsible for the root causes of the situation, while adding that unilateralism cannot be the path forward. Costa said retaliation by Iran and its proxies across the region, including attacks against neighbours such as Cyprus, undermines international peace and security.

Costa called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and warned of the risks of further escalation, saying such a path threatens the Middle East, Europe and beyond. He also said the EU stands with the Iranian people and supports respect for their rights.

Drone strike and security response in Cyprus

In the early hours of Monday, a Shahed-type drone struck military facilities in the British Base of Akrotiri, causing minor damage.

The Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be linked to Hezbollah operating in Lebanon, prompted heightened security measures. Several countries, including Greece and France, deployed warships, aircraft and other air defence assets to shield Cyprus. The UK also announced the dispatch of a warship.
