Dromolaxia, Cyprus. An administrative court has rejected a request to suspend the compulsory culling of livestock in Dromolaxia linked to foot-and-mouth disease. The court ruled that public interest prevails over the applicant’s positions.
Court decision issued after hearing
The decision was issued on Friday following a hearing on an application by a livestock farmer seeking to stop veterinary services from proceeding with enforcement measures.
State opposed suspension request
The legal service said attorney-general George Savvides requested an expedited hearing due to the urgency of the matter. It said the republic opposed the suspension.
Public interest favoured state
The court found no manifest illegality or irreparable harm and said the balance of interests favoured the state.
Order upheld despite expected losses
The court said the decision was regrettable in relation to the expected loss of animals, but it upheld the veterinary order.
