Nicosia, Cyprus. Farmers are set to protest against the EU–Mercosur trade agreement, MEP George Georgiou said on Friday, warning it threatens food safety standards and traditional Cypriot products. A farmers’ march is scheduled for next Saturday, February 14.
Warnings over competition and food standards
Speaking at a press conference at Europe House, Georgiou said the agreement would expose Cypriot producers to unfair competition from low-cost, mass-produced imports, undermining public health and local agriculture. He said the deal risks eroding food quality while failing to protect emblematic products such as halloumi.
Protest plans announced
Farmers’ union president Michalis Lytras announced the planned protest and described the agreement as “a tombstone for the agricultural sector.” The march is planned from Eleftheria square to Europe House and onwards to the presidential palace.
Political stance and next steps in Strasbourg
Georgiou said the European Left and Akel were not opposed to European integration, adding, “We are not nihilists or Eurosceptics.” He said they recognise the benefits of subsidies but want “a Europe that serves its citizens, young people, health security and the environment.” Georgiou said amendments to the agreement would again be submitted next week in Strasbourg, despite limited expectations of success.
What do you think the EU–Mercosur agreement could mean for Cypriot farmers and local food products?
