Cypriot wine recommendations for summer burgers

Nicosia, Cyprus. Summer burger meals can be paired with wine as well as beer, with bright, refreshing styles suggested for grilled burgers in warm weather. Merlot is recommended for beef burgers with sweet toppings, while fuller-bodied rosé is proposed for turkey or chicken burgers.

Merlot for beef burgers

Burgers have pronounced umami characteristics and can be paired with a range of wine styles. Merlot with plummy and juicy berry fruit, alongside a savoury element, is suited to burgers featuring caramelised onions or barbecue sauce.

Approachable Merlot served slightly chilled can complement most burger styles without overpowering them. Wines intended for young drinking are suggested.

The 2024 Tsiakkas Winery Merlot, PGI Lemesos, has an ABV of 14.5% and is priced at €14.50. The high-altitude Merlot is produced from grapes grown in sandy-volcanic soil and undergoes 12 days of skin contact, selected yeast fermentation and frequent punch-downs.

The wine features dark red fruit, rounded tannins and a smooth finish. Plum, cherry and blackberry flavours dominate the mid-palate, while tobacco, cedar, clove, vanilla and mocha notes extend the finish.

Rosé for turkey or chicken burgers

A fuller-bodied rosé is recommended for turkey burgers, which are often served with a range of toppings, sauces and condiments. Turkey patties are milder than beef patties, while lettuce, tomato and avocado can add further flavours to the burger.

A heartier rosé with citrus and plum notes can remain refreshing in warm weather while pairing with these ingredients.

The 2025 Zambartas Winery Garden of Cyprus Rosé Cabernet Franc – Lefkada, PGI Lemesos, has an ABV of 12% and is priced at €11. Made from 83% Lefkada and 17% Cabernet Franc, the strawberry-coloured wine has aromas of ripe red berries, raw pomegranate, blood orange, rose petals and allspice.

It is described as lush and flavourful, with balanced acidity, subtle fine tannins and a refreshing mouthfeel.
