Cypriots increasingly choosing local outdoor getaways for short breaks

Nicosia, Cyprus. More Cypriots are choosing short local trips centred on outdoor activities instead of airport queues, expensive flights and long preparations. Travel experts describe the trend as “darecations” and “micro adventures,” involving brief breaks focused on physical challenges and exploring places within Cyprus.

Growing interest in local adventure travel

Outdoor adventure companies say they have seen increased interest from locals seeking a break from routine and a closer connection with nature through activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, camping and nature-based sports.

Shift observed since the pandemic

EcoTour Adventures founder Andreas Tsokkalides said the trend has become especially noticeable in recent years. He said that since the pandemic, Cypriots have increasingly started to get to know their own country, alongside many foreign residents living permanently on the island.

Tsokkalides said many people are becoming familiar with areas of Cyprus they did not previously know existed. He added that, beyond joining organised tours, locals are now being seen in places that were once unfamiliar to them, including nature trails and natural monuments, often bringing their children.

Day trips and weekend escapes

Adventure Mountain Park in Kyperounta said it has observed the same pattern. Team member Jenny Schauroth said the park has seen a noticeable increase in Cypriots looking for outdoor experiences, particularly activities suitable for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

According to the park, visitors are showing more interest in adventure-based experiences rather than simply travelling to a destination. The park said many locals are discovering that adventure, attractive landscapes and memorable experiences do not necessarily require travel abroad.

Combining adventure and family time

Adventure Mountain Park said that for many visitors, the appeal is not limited to the activity itself but also includes a chance to escape the stress of daily life. It said visitors often come looking to combine adventure with family time while spending time away from technology.
