Nicosia, Cyprus. The state has allocated €27 million to support 142 voluntary organisations providing social care services, Deputy Social Welfare Minister Clea Hadjistefanou-Papaellina announced on Monday.
The funding will support organisations serving older people, children, people with disabilities, victims of violence and other vulnerable groups.
Government and voluntary sector cooperation
Speaking at the fifth annual dialogue with voluntary organisations, Hadjistefanou-Papaellina said the funding reflected the government’s commitment to working with the voluntary sector to strengthen the social support network.
She described voluntary organisations as strategic partners in implementing state social policy and highlighted their role in caring for vulnerable citizens. The dialogue provides a platform for communication between the government and the voluntary sector, she said.
Legal and labour developments
The deputy minister referred to recent measures aimed at strengthening the sector, including a comprehensive legal framework for the Pancyprian Volunteerism Coordinating Council to promote volunteerism and support organisations across the island.
She also noted the signing in January of the first nationwide sectoral collective labour agreement for social welfare institutions and community volunteering bodies, describing it as a significant milestone.
Volunteerism and disability reforms
Cyprus will mark the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development in 2026, with more than 300 volunteer activities planned.
A volunteering day scheduled for September will encourage newly retired people to share their skills with local communities.
Hadjistefanou-Papaellina also highlighted reforms intended to strengthen social inclusion and independent living for people with disabilities.
