Cyprus and Egypt sign strategic partnership declaration at informal EU Council summit in Nicosia

President Nikos Christodoulides with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus and Egypt signed a joint declaration on a strategic partnership on the sidelines of the Informal EU Council summit in Nicosia on Friday. The move marks a political upgrade in relations between the two countries.

Framework for expanded cooperation

The declaration places the countries’ relationship on a more structured and institutional footing, strengthening cooperation in energy, security, defence, trade, investment, technology, education and regional stability.

Geopolitical context and foreign policy focus

For Cyprus, the agreement carries geopolitical significance amid heightened instability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, and reflects Nicosia’s effort to deepen ties with key regional partners through a consistent and targeted foreign policy.

High-level engagement

President Nikos Christodoulides has prioritised strengthening relations with Egypt and other countries in the wider region. The Cyprus-Egypt relationship has developed through regular high-level contacts, political trust and practical cooperation.

Energy at the core

Energy remains central to the partnership, with Cyprus and Egypt having signed agreements on developing Cypriot natural gas fields, including Kronos and Aphrodite. The latest declaration places that cooperation within a broader framework focused on energy security, diversification and links between the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe.

Political coordination and economic ties

The declaration also strengthens political coordination between the two governments on regional and international issues, with both countries positioning themselves as actors of stability amid complex regional challenges. Economic cooperation is another pillar, with the upgraded partnership expected to improve conditions for trade, investment, infrastructure projects and business ties.

Broader areas of cooperation

Beyond traditional areas, the agreement expands cooperation to technology, education, the environment, connectivity and people-to-people contacts.
