Cyprus bus driver unions call for safety measures after assault in Nicosia district

Nicosia, Cyprus. Trade unions Sek and Peo have called on bus companies to implement measures to protect drivers and passengers following an attack on a bus in the Nicosia district. The unions warned they may take legal action if no steps are taken.

Unions’ letter to bus companies

In a letter sent to bus companies, Sek and Peo said they have repeatedly raised what they described as serious safety problems affecting both drivers and passengers. The unions said it is unacceptable that workers are exposed to dangers and unprovoked assaults while carrying out their duties without protective measures in place.

The unions said that if measures are not taken, employees would “take all legal measures to protect their rights.”

Proposed protection measures

The unions said it is imperative that drivers be seated in a separate cabin and that security cameras be installed.

They also proposed legislative coverage for inspectors of passenger transport companies, increased surveillance in crowded areas as a deterrent to violence, and the possibility of banning passengers with delinquent behaviour from using the service.

The unions said they expect immediate and positive cooperation to avoid having to respond after more serious incidents.

Recipients and recent incident

Copies of the letter were sent to the labour and transport ministries, and the police.

On April 12, a driver was attacked on a bus in Aglandja, resulting in injuries to his head and knee.

Following the incident, Sek representative Charalambos Avgousti said there had been around a dozen serious incidents across all provinces over the past two years, but that companies still did not see the need to install protective booths.
