Nicosia, Cyprus. Bus drivers will stage a two-hour work stoppage on March 27 from 9am to 11am, unions SEK and PEO said Tuesday, citing safety concerns over warning signals at intersections.

Union concerns and planned stoppage

SEK and PEO said the stoppage follows repeated interventions and warnings to the transport ministry about problems they attribute to lights installed at intersections, which they said affect the safety of professional bus drivers.

Calls for a solution

The unions said that despite their warnings, no substantial solution has been provided.

Red-light warning system proposal

They said the state proposed installing red-light warning systems to prevent sudden braking, which the unions said poses serious safety risks for passengers.

Braking limitations cited

The unions said buses cannot stop abruptly due to their size and because passengers may be seated without seatbelts or standing.
