Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. Finding a legal campsite in Cyprus has become increasingly difficult this summer following the closure, suspension and uncertain status of several organised facilities.
The closure of the Polis Chrysochous campsite, upgrading works at Platania and uncertainty over the campsite near Troodos square have raised questions over whether the island has sufficient organised camping facilities.
Fewer organised options
Camping has long been an affordable way for families, students and outdoor enthusiasts to spend time in Cyprus’ forests and along its coastline.
Authorities have said the changes are needed to improve safety and modernise infrastructure. Campers and environmental groups, however, have warned that fewer legal options may lead people to use unmanaged areas, increasing fire risks and littering.
Campers’ concerns
Anton Fedorov, who has lived in Cyprus for about 12 years, said he and his friends had struggled for several weekends to find a place for a camping trip.
Fedorov, who has camped in Polis Chrysochous, Troodos and Platania, said the sites offered an affordable alternative to accommodation and enabled people to escape summer heat by spending time in the mountains and forests.
He said traditional camping should not be compared with glamping, describing it as a simpler and more affordable way for families and friends to spend time away from daily routines.
