Cyprus Chief Scientist Skourides recognised at GITEX ASIA 2026 in Singapore

Singapore, Singapore. Cyprus’ Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides was recognised among the “Top 50 What’s Next Champion” thought leaders at GITEX ASIA 2026, where he joined discussions on ethical artificial intelligence and digital trust.

Recognition and Cyprus representation

Skourides, Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology of the Republic of Cyprus, represented Cyprus as an emerging hub for deep-tech innovation during the event held at Marina Bay Sands.

Focus on AI governance and digital security

According to an announcement released on Thursday, his participation highlighted Cyprus’ growing role in global dialogue on AI governance, digital identity and cybersecurity challenges. He took part in two fireside discussions addressing the rapid deployment of AI and the erosion of digital identity.

AI safety, regulation and standards

In a session titled “The AI Safety Paradox Can Companies Win the Innovation Race Without Creating the Next Global Risk,” Skourides joined journalist Norman Goh of Nikkei Asia to discuss the complexities of scaling AI systems. He said that as organisations move toward Industry 5.0, AI systems are evolving into autonomous agents that influence human behaviour and critical infrastructure.

Skourides emphasised the role of the EU AI Act and complementary regulatory frameworks in aligning innovation with safety, accountability and trust. He also pointed to a widening gap between AI commercialisation and ethical oversight, adding that tools such as the EU AI Act and international standards including ISO IEC 42001 can support compliance while reducing deployment risks.

National strategies and sector impact

Skourides called for adaptive national digital strategies to address emerging threats, including misuse of biometric technologies and systemic risks in financial ecosystems. The discussion also covered balancing technological advancement with societal responsibility in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare and the public sector.
