Cyprus defence minister stresses training and readiness during “Dimitra 2026” exercise

Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas

Larnaca, Cyprus. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas highlighted the importance of training, readiness and personnel development during the final phase of the “Dimitra 2026” military exercise at the Kalo Chorio firing range on Thursday. He said safeguarding Cyprus’ sovereignty and territorial integrity is essential for national security.

Training and adaptation

Palmas said the main duty of the armed forces is to train, educate and adapt to new realities, adding that the Republic’s security relies on a capable defence force.

He said the National Guard’s greatest asset is its personnel rather than its equipment, and that advanced weapons have limited value without high morale, strong training and proper education.

Modern security challenges

Palmas said modern security challenges require ongoing adaptation and readiness as military technology evolves.

International partnerships

He also referred to Cyprus’ expanding international partnerships, especially with Greece, saying stronger relations have enhanced the deterrent capabilities of both the Republic and the National Guard.

Palmas said the close relationship with Greece has boosted the deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus.

Support for personnel

Palmas assured National Guard officers and personnel of his support as defence minister, saying they have a partner in the Ministry of Defence to discuss issues affecting them.
