Nicosia, Cyprus. The fire brigade responded to 38 calls across Cyprus in the past 24 hours as strong winds and heavy rain caused multiple incidents. Police urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads due to severe weather conditions.
Fire brigade incidents across districts
In a post on X, fire brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis said crews in Nicosia responded to four incidents involving the removal of trees that had fallen due to strong winds.
Fire stations in Limassol handled nine calls in Limassol, Ayios Tychonas and Dora. Seven of the incidents involved fallen trees, while two related to the removal of sheets of metal blown loose by the wind. In some cases, vehicles were damaged after trees collapsed onto them.
Paphos crews attended four calls in Paphos, Ayia Marina, Pomos and Polis Chrysochous to remove fallen trees and deal with a collapsed shelter. Damage to vehicles was also reported after trees fell during the storm.
Fire stations in the Famagusta district responded to five calls in Protaras, Paralimni, Deryneia and Xylofagou involving fallen trees, a dangerous scaffold and restaurant and cafe signs blown loose by strong winds.
Police warning to motorists
In a separate post, police warned motorists to be particularly careful due to the severe weather conditions affecting many areas. Drivers were advised to reduce speed, maintain safe distances and keep their headlights on, as heavy rainfall and strong winds have been causing disruptions on the road network.
