Cyprus government reaffirms commitment to UN-based settlement talks

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou

Nicosia, Cyprus. The government remains committed to securing a Cyprus settlement through negotiations based on the United Nations framework and European Union law, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said on Thursday.

Speaking on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides, Ioannou said resolving the Cyprus problem remained the government’s foremost priority.

Negotiations and UN framework

Ioannou made the remarks at a commemorative event marking the anniversaries of the 1974 coup and the Turkish invasion.

He said the government was working to create conditions for the resumption of negotiations for a comprehensive settlement, based on the agreed UN framework, the accumulated negotiating acquis, and EU principles, values and law.

The Greek Cypriot side continued to support the initiatives of the UN secretary-general and was working constructively to enable talks to resume, he said.

Foreign policy and partnerships

Ioannou said recent diplomatic efforts had gained momentum through what he described as the government’s clear political will and persistent diplomacy.

He said these efforts had been recognised by the international community and had been supported by Cyprus’ strengthened role as a reliable partner within the EU and the wider region.

The government’s foreign policy, strategic partnerships, participation in the EU and efforts to reinforce the Republic’s national strength were intended to improve Cyprus’ international position and support a return to dialogue, he said.

Goal of reunification

Despite difficulties and challenges, the government remained committed to a functional and viable solution that would reunite Cyprus and guarantee peaceful coexistence for all lawful residents, Ioannou said.

He said the objective was the development of the Republic of Cyprus into a modern, reunified European state and a member of the EU and UN, where all lawful residents could live in peace, security, democracy and prosperity.
