Cyprus government seeks release of Greek Cypriot detained in north near buffer zone

Nicosia, Cyprus. The government confirmed on Monday it is taking action to secure the release of a Greek Cypriot held in the north since last Tuesday. It said efforts are being made through Unficyp and a competent technical committee.

Detention near the buffer zone

The man was collecting wild herbs and asparagus near the buffer zone in Yerolakkos when he was intercepted by Turkish Cypriot authorities. He was brought before a court in northern Nicosia after being initially detained for entering what was described as a restricted military zone.

Charges and remand

Turkish Cypriot police said 16 shotgun cartridges were found in his vehicle. The prosecution charged him with entering a restricted area and illegal possession and transport of explosives. A judge granted a four-day remand to allow for further investigation.

Government response and warning on crossings

The government said the detention is unlawful and that every measure is being taken to secure his return. It also noted that crossing into the north other than through recognised points can lead to immediate arrest, and said such cases are treated as a priority through diplomatic and technical mechanisms.
