Cyprus health minister highlights importance of healthy diets on Cyprus Nutrition Day

Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides speaking on Monday

Nicosia, Cyprus. Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides said dietary habits are decisive for people’s health, affecting growth, disease prevention and quality of life. Speaking on Thursday, he outlined policies and actions tied to Cyprus’ Nutrition Day.

Focus on early-life nutrition and chronic disease prevention

Addressing a press conference to mark Cyprus’ Nutrition Day, Charalambides said the health ministry was focused on promoting policies and actions that encourage a healthy diet.

He said adopting healthy ideals early in life contributes to positive behaviour with long-term effects, while consuming overprocessed food and having a low intake of nutritional ingredients is linked to a higher risk of chronic disease and a significant burden on public health and health systems.

Collaboration and national strategies

The minister said the health ministry was collaborating with services to promote healthy dietary habits and enhance public health.

He added that national strategies have been developed to address diabetes and cardiovascular disease, including actions to prevent obesity, promote healthy living and enhance awareness.

School checks, awareness actions, and parent guidebook

Charalambides said health ministry services are implementing annual checks in schools and organising awareness actions for students on healthy eating and exercise, with a focus on preventing chronic disease from a young age.

He said a guidebook is also being prepared for parents and guardians on managing children’s weight.

European best practices and broader involvement

Charalambides said European best practices are taken into account when preparing actions, requiring the involvement of the state, the food industry, professional organisations and the social partners.

Public message for Nutrition Day

Within the framework of this year’s Nutrition Day, the health ministry urged the public to discover the power of nutrition as a means to improve health and wellbeing.

Charalambides said the ministry remains dedicated to promoting policies and actions that support a healthy diet and physical activity, aiming for a healthier and more resilient society.
