Nicosia, Cyprus. The House on Thursday passed a law extending the deadline for paying road tax to the end of March, citing glitches with online payments on the Road Transport Department website. The original deadline of midnight on March 11 has been moved to March 31.

Online system issues and last-minute payments

Dipa MP Alekos Tryfonides said that on the last day, Wednesday, March 11, the Road Transport Department (RTD) system experienced a problem that prevented many people from renewing their road tax.

People reported that the RTD website was down on Wednesday, likely due to heavy online traffic as many rushed to pay at the last minute. Earlier, the RTD announced that last-minute payments could be made only online.

Renewals, penalties and permit duration

As of Monday, a total of 677,113 vehicles had their road tax renewed.

Late renewals incur a €10 fine plus a 10 per cent extra charge on the current year’s registration fee. Road tax permits can be renewed for three, six, nine or 12 months.

Register removals for unpaid 2025 tax

Vehicles that are not renewed or immobilised may be removed from the TOM register if the 2025 tax remains unpaid by the deadline.
