A draft law was discussed at the meeting of the House interior committee. The authors of the draft document suggest rising the minimum age for the purchase of alcoholic drinks to 18 years.

At the moment the minimum age for purchase of alcoholic drinks is 17 years. The initiative comes as a response to the recent statistical data received from the European research Centre. According to the recent survey, Cyprus ranked 3rd among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption among young people.

Georgia topped the list and Czech Republic came second in alcohol consumption rating. As stated in the report, among 48 countries participating in the survey, young people from Norway and Island are the ones least interested in the alcoholic drinks.
