Cyprus minister says aviation is vital for Europe’s cohesion, growth and global competitiveness

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades in Brussels

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades said aviation is a public good and a strategic enabler of Europe’s openness and prosperity, stressing that connectivity is an economic necessity for Cyprus and a prerequisite for growth. Speaking at the European Aviation Strategy Summit 2026 in Nicosia on Monday, he said regional aviation is essential to maintaining links for islands, peripheral regions and remote communities.

Role of aviation in territorial cohesion

Vafeades said Europe must continue to ensure that islands, peripheral regions and remote communities remain connected to opportunities, markets and services. He said territorial cohesion is a fundamental European objective and that aviation is often the only practical means of guaranteeing equal access and connectivity for all regions.

Cyprus presidency and European openness

The minister said Cyprus’ EU presidency, which organised the summit, is guided by a vision for an autonomous union that remains open to the world, adding that aviation is a clear expression of that vision. He said the sector connects people, supports the economy, strengthens tourism and trade, and maintains Europe’s links with its neighbours and global partners.

Challenges facing the sector

Vafeades said the summit was taking place at a defining moment for European aviation and brought together policymakers, regulators, airlines, airports, manufacturers, air navigation service providers and international organisations. He said the sector is facing geopolitical instability, airspace restrictions, supply-chain pressures, rising operational costs and the challenge of decarbonisation.

Focus on competitiveness and transition

He said Europe is preparing a new Aviation Strategy that will shape the sector’s future for years to come and that competitiveness must remain central to discussions in an increasingly challenging global environment. Vafeades said that while Europe remains committed to sustainability, safety and high, clear and simplified regulatory standards, it must also ensure that European airlines, airports, manufacturers and service providers can continue to compete globally.

Links with neighbouring regions

The minister said the green transition must be accompanied by innovation, investment and policies that strengthen Europe’s position in international aviation. He added that Europe’s prosperity, security and global influence increasingly depend on strong aviation links with neighbouring countries, including the Middle East, North Africa and the Western Balkans, to support trade, tourism, investment and people-to-people contacts while reinforcing Europe’s role as a global hub.
