Glasgow, United Kingdom. Cyprus will send a 36-member team to the 23rd Commonwealth Games, aiming to build on its record at the multi-sport event.
Team composition
More than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations will compete from 23 July to 2 August. Cyprus will be represented in athletics, artistic gymnastics, judo, swimming, weightlifting and para-weightlifting.
The Cypriot team includes 23 men and 13 women. Its delegation increased from 33 to 36 athletes after the Cyprus Olympic Committee secured three additional places based on past performances.
Opening ceremony
High jumper Elena Kulichenko will carry the Cypriot flag at Thursday’s opening ceremony, while para-weightlifter Maria Markou will carry the baton.
Their selection reflects their achievements and the inclusion of para-athletes in the unified delegation.
Commonwealth Games record
Cyprus has competed at the Commonwealth Games since 1978, missing only the 1986 edition because of a boycott.
The country has won 64 medals: 25 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze, placing it 16th in the all-time medal table.
Triple jumper Marios Hadjiandreou won Cyprus’ first gold medal at the 1990 Auckland Games. Fani Theophanous became the country’s first female champion in 1994.
At the Birmingham 2022 Games, Cyprus won 11 medals, including two golds.
