Cyprus pig farmers warn full eradication of FMD could take 4–5 years

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus may still be years away from being fully free of foot and mouth disease (FMD), according to Petros Kailas, president of the Pancyprian pig farmers association.

EU extends restrictions until June 15

Kailas spoke after the European Union decided to extend restrictions related to foot and mouth disease until June 15. He said Cyprus has “a very long road” ahead before the island is freed from the disease.

Timeline linked to vaccinated animals

Kailas said the last animal that has been vaccinated may have a lifespan of four to five years before it is culled. “In the best-case scenario, we still have 4–5 years ahead of us during which our country will not be free of the virus,” he said.

Under the EU decision, trade in animals must be prohibited for three months after the slaughter or death of the last vaccinated animal.

Ongoing cases and vaccination efforts

Kailas said cases were still being found and that not all had been reported yet. He said efforts to vaccinate all cattle, pigs, goats and sheep were continuing and could take several years, adding that vaccines may remain in use.
